Childs Blue Transferware 30-piece Miniature Dinner Set
Ridgway Staffordshire, England c. 1890
This is a delicious childrens or dolls transferware ironstone toy dinner set, circa 1889 made for a doll house or for child's playtime. The color is a brilliant cobalt blue, a fine complement to flow blue.
The set is decorated with beautiful daisy chain pattern, a fine example of the Victorian love of nature, with the daisy chains being positioned randomly on the wares, sometimes horizontally, sometimes vertically and sometimes on a diagonal. The set was made by Ridgways, a pottery in Stoke-on-Trent in the Staffordshire region of England. The set is unmarked except for a series of random numbers and the word 'ENGLAND'. The pattern dates to 1890-1895.
The set includes: • Soup tureen with lid and undertray 6” long • Sauce tureen with lid and undertray 4” long • 2 covered vege tureens with lids 5” long • 3 graduated platters 4 1/2” – 7” long (chip and line on underside of small platter) • 6 dinner plates 4” diameter (nic on underside of 1 plate) • 6 side plates 3 1/2" diameter • 4 soup plates 4” diameter
The set is in great condition, with only the minor issue delineated above and no other chips, cracks, or repairs. Very few transfer imperfections and stilt marks, original to the making. Richly detailed, with clear and crisp transfers, it is just amazing that this little set belonged to a child well over 100 years ago!
Children's and miniature antique transferware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The cobalt blue transfer is earthy and striking, making a stunning complement to any collection of aesthetic transferware or any early children's wares, and the pattern makes splendid gift for the botanist in your life!
