Childs Cobalt Flow Blue Transferware Tea Set

ANIMALS

Copeland late Spode Stoke-on-Trent England c. 1880

This is a stunning child's earthenware dollhouse tea set, transfer printed in a brilliant cobalt flow blue. The set is decorated with a parade of random domestic animals and wild critters covering the exterior of all the pieces. The animals include a deer rooster goat donkey duck goose squirrel cow dog horse pig cat fox pheasant wolf quail turkey camel leopard and zebra. The ultimate zoological guide and teaching tool on ceramic! Impeccably designed and boldly decorated to inspire the imagination of every child. This delectable pattern is featured in Playtime Porcelain and Pottery by Lorraine Punchard, English Toy China by Doris Lechler, and Gifts for Good Children Part II by Maureen Batkin. The whimsical transfers each measure about 1" in size.

The set is comprised of: • Teapot with lid, 4 1/2” tall, professionally restored spout, faint age line on side of spout tip; • Covered sugar box with lid, 3” tall; • Creamer or milk jug, 2 1/2" tall, flake on edge; • Waste bowl, 2 1/4" tall, 4” across top rim; • 4 cups, 2” tall, one with crack; and • 4 saucers.

The tea set is marked with a transfer printed and impressed ‘W T Copeland and Sons’ and "Copeland late Spode Stoke on Trent England" dating to the 1880s. The set was made in Stoke on Trent in the Staffordshire region of England. It is of the highest quality transferware, suitable for adult tastes and standards.

The set is in overall very good condition with just the minor issues mentioned above. There are no other chips, cracks or repairs. Stilt marks and typical minor firing imperfections. The set is earthy and uniquely charming naive a quirky and playful piece that would have been treasured by a lucky child over 100 years ago! Offered as is.

Children's flow blue transferware of this quality is quite scarce and this pattern is especially rare and sought after. This delicious little set will make a special addition to any collection of children's wares, and makes a perfect gift to a veterinarian , farmer, zoologist , dog trainer or other animal lover!
