Victorian Child's Flow Blue Transferware Tea Set TRIO

PUNCH & JUDY

Charles Allerton & Sons ~ Staffordshire England c. 1890

This fanciful child's transferware cup saucer and plate trio dates to c1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea set, the round cup stands 2" tall; the saucer measures about 4-1/2" in diameter with a fluted cup ring; and the plate measures 5 1/4" in diameter. The color is a bright flow blue or dark cobalt blue.

The set features the storied characters from the Pulcinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch, Judy and baby, and and a fanciful pipe-smoking frog. The cup also has a lady frog wearing a bonnet and sipping a cup of tea. These whimsical characters are surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. This pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as in Gifts for Good Children (Volume 2) written by Maureen Batkin and published by Richard Dennis .

The pattern name is "Punch". It was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England in the mid-to-late 19th century, known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The saucer and plate are marked with the C Allerton & Sons backstamp.

The set is in overall very good condition, with no chips cracks or repairs. Glaze crazing, stray kiln fleck. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect these dishes...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, with little skips bumps and dips that were glazed over in the factory and runny smeary glaze. The primitive and hasty style adds to their folksy charm. Offered as is.

Transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after. This amusing set will make a wonderful addition to your collection of children's dishes or any collection of Punch and Judy, jester, puppetry or magical memorabilia. We have also listed a playful range of child's transferware dishes to mix and match. Contact us if you are interested in the same pattern in other colors and forms. We always happy to combine shipping for multiple purchases.
