EARLY CHILDS ALPHABET ABC PLATE
BROWNHILLS POTTERY CO
This 6 1/4" plate has a crisp image transfer printed in rich chocolate brown with gold and sepia wisps of hand painted underglaze color wash.
The ABC alphabet letters are transfer printed around the perimeter encircling a young pony eating hay in the stable.
Condition is very good, clean with a modest patina on the back side only.. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Wear consistent with age. The usual stilt marks and minor transfer imperfections original to the making.
The plate was made by the Brownhills Pottery Co in Staffordshire England circa 1880. It is unmarked. Part of a series of central images of wild domestic and farm animals originating in the pages of early childrens’ books. Plates like these were given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as educational tools, as well. An outstanding addition to your ABC collection.
An earthy motif and finely engraved pastoral scene, perfect for any horse lover, veterinarian or farm gal.
