Child's Toy Transfer Print Dinner Plate
CAT & FIDDLE
Whittaker & Co Staffordshire England 1888
This is a wonderful transfer print childs dinner plate, circa 1888. Originally part of a complete miniature children's breakfast or dinner set, the plate measures 5" in diameter. The transfer is a rich country blue. The plate depicts the characters in the much beloved child's nursery rhyme:
HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE THE COW JUMPED OVER THE MOON THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED TO SEE SUCH CRAFT AND THE DISH RAN AWAY WITH THE SPOON
The plate was made in Hanley in the Staffordshire region of England by Whitaker and Co. as part of its Nursery Rhymes series. The plate has a maker's mark and registration number 103739, indicating the year 1888. The image on the plate was taken from a children's book titled Favourite Rhymes for the Nursery published in London by Thomas Nelson in 1870.
The plate is in great condition with no other chips cracks or repairs. Minor transfer imperfections (the edge of the word Moon was slightly cut off in the making,) and fine glaze crazing consistent with the age of the piece. The plate is well potted and the transfer is richly detailed. This great little plate is a joy to behold, a pocket sized work of art!
Nursery rhyme tea sets and dolls table wares from this era are hard to find and quite desirable. The spirit of the Aesthetic Movement is captured in the design. The piece will make a fabulous addition to your collection of children's dishes or early nursery wares. It is being sold without a reserve.
