EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE ABC PLATE
THE GARDEN FLOWER

This is an 7 " child's transferware Alphabet plate , circa 1840. The plate is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in dark black with fabulous hand coloring under glaze. The plate has a sawtooth style rim with the full alphabet. The center transfered scene is of a young girl in period dress sitting on a garden bench attending to her spectacular flower garden.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Plates like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.
The condition of this ABC plate is Excellent with no wear.
