FLOWERS THAT NEVER FADE ~ ATTENTION
Staffordshire England c. 1820
This exceptional early childs plate measures 5 1/4" in diameter with scalloped rims and press moulded flower border. The center of the plate is transfer printed in a country red, with polychrome hand clobbered enamel paints in green blue and yellow around the rim, finished with a pearlware glaze.
The plate is one of four being offered individually, each containing a rhyming proverb extoling an inspirational virtue from a series titled Flowers That Never Fade. These early plates were made and given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as early bible and moral teaching tools. The images were originally found as woodcuts in an early primer titled Elmina, of the Flower that Never Fades, A Tale for Young People by Charles Masson, first printed in London in 1791 and republished in 1815. This charming fairy tale was originally written for the Princess Wilhelmina, who is educated by "a beneficent fairy, whose name was Lidorania." It is the tale of a virtuous young woman who is given an enchanted fairy flower plant that helps her learn and adhere to the virtues of modesty, virtue, beneficence, gentleness, grace, etc. Her reward for practicing these virtues is that she marries a prince and lives happily ever after. The virtues illustrated on this plate LOYALTY with a verse and illustration.
The plate is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks front and back original to the making and light wear to the back rim, fine overall glaze ponding and light crazing consistent with age. The plate has no makers mark. Made in the Staffordshire region of England from early 19th century. Featured in the Transferware Collectors Club database, an extremely hard to find set that would make an extraordinary addition to your collection with antique naive folky children's English ceramics.
