EARLY NURSERY TRANSFERWARE PLATE
THE LETTER " B "
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1840
This is a 5 " child's transferware plate , circa 1840. The plate is nicely potted of earthenware with a press moulded alphabet border and rope twist edge.
It is transfer printed in sepia brown.
The central transfer shows The letter " B".
B is for BOAT ~ BALL ~ BAT with illustrations engraved and enveloping the letter B.
It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Plates like this were used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.
The plate is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Insignificant transfer crease original to the making. Great deal of attention to detail. These single letter ABC plates are hard to find...great piece to build your collection.
