Rare Red Staffordshire Transferware Plate PEACE ON EARTH ~ MILLENIUM
Ralph Stevenson Staffordshire England c. 1832
Rare and wonderful early red transferware plate in the MILLENIUM pattern attributed to Ralph Stevenson, circa 1832. It is a fabulous transfer pattern with incredible detail. The scalloped edge plate measures approximately 6 1/4" in diameter and is decorated with an uncommon simplified variation of the historic MILENNIUM pattern with the motto `PEACE ON EARTH'.
The pattern depicts the biblical prophecy of Isaiah's vision of Judah and Jerusalem with images of peace on earth and abundance -- a lion, lamb cow and a child leading them -- representing the relationship between man and God, the all-seeing eye of God as described in the bible shown on the plate opened to Isaiah Chapter XI, VI. An abundance of fruit, flowers and wheat surround the center illustration. This Milennium illustration is finely detailed and displays magnificently.
The plate is in great condition with no cracks, chips, flea bites, stains, etc. It is so clear and clean that it almost sparkles, unusual condition considering its age. It must have been a cherished plate to be so well preserved.
The plate is unsigned except for a printed numeral 2 on the reverse side. Widely attributed to Ralph Stevenson in Staffordshire England, the Milennium pattern of 1832 is highly collectible and sought after, often by those who collect Masonic-related items. It is rare to find one of this size with the Peace on Earth legend. The plate would be a wonderful addition to any collection. Its never too early to think about Christmas!
