EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE ABC PLATE

This is a large 8 3/4 " child's transferware Alphabet plate , circa 1860. The plate is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in blue with a scene of an organ grinder playing his tunes to the amusement of three young children. As the grinder turns his crank, animated characters come to life on his organ.
Plates like this were made as an aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.
The condition of this ABC plate is great. Clean and bright with no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Normal stilt marks from the kiln.
