PEARLWARE CHILD'S TRANSFERWARE MUG
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1840
This is a child's transferware mug, circa 1840. This diminutive piece stands 2 1/2" tall x 2 3/4" wide with an applied loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in dark black with one side showing the PAST along with the motto " THY WORD IS A LAMP UNTO MY FEET. The opposite side shows the FUTURE and reads MY FATHER THOU ART THE GUIDE OF MY YOUTH. A mother separates the two scenes with young angels in each corner.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as used to aid in moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.
The mug is in exceptional condition, appears to have never been used. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs.
