Antique Child's Cup and Saucer Set ZOO ANIMALS W T Copeland (late Spode) Stoke-on-Trent England c. 1890
This is a stunning child's earthenware miniature cup and saucer set. It is transfer printed in a brilliant blue green teal. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the cup stands 2" tall with a London shaped handle; the saucer measures 4 1/2" in diameter.
The decoration consists of a parade of domestic animals and wild critters, with 5 individual transfer printed animals parading around the saucer and 5 more on the cup. The animals include animals from the farm, along with domestic pets and wild animals – 3 dogs (greyhound terrier and spaniel) a chicken or hen deer or stag donkey or mule goose turkey beefeater cox or ox and an amusing smiling pig. The ultimate zoological guide and quadrupeds teaching tool on ceramic! Impeccably designed and boldly decorated to inspire the imagination of every child. The whimsical transfers each measure about 3/4" - 1" in size.
The base is marked with a transfer printed and impressed "W T Copeland Late Stoke on Trent " dating to the 1890s. It was made in Stoke in the Staffordshire region of England, the highest quality transferware, suitable for adult tastes and standards.
The set in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Stilt marks and typical minor firing imperfections. The set is earthy quirky and uniquely charming a naive and playful piece that would have been treasured by a lucky child over 100 years ago!
Children's folk art transferware of this quality is quite scarce and this pattern is especially rare and sought after.
