Rare Child's Toy Transferware Teapot
CAT AND FIDDLE, OVER THE MOON
Whittaker & Co Staffordshire England 1888
This is a wonderful child's transferware toy teapot, circa 1888. Originally part of a complete miniature children's tea set for doll play and tea parties, the teapot stand 4" tall to the top of the button finial. It measures 6" in long. The transfer is a rich cherry red. The teapot depicts the characters in the much beloved child's nursery rhyme:
HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE THE COW JUMPED OVER THE MOON THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED TO SEE SUCH CRAFT AND THE DISH RAN AWAY WITH THE SPOON
The pitcher was made in Hanley in the Staffordshire region of England by Whitaker and Co. as part of its Nursery Rhymes series. The maker's mark on the underside bears the registration number 103739, indicating the year 1888. The illustration on the teapot was taken from a children's book titled 'Favourite Rhymes for the Nursery' published in London by Thomas Nelson in 1870. We have attached a photo of the engraved illustration from the book for your reference.
The teapot is in overall great condition, with 2 very minor exceptions: a discolored shallow chip on the underside of the tip of the spout, and a discolored chip on the inside of the lid, mostly visible only when the lid is separated from the base. No other chips cracks or repairs. Minor transfer imperfections original to the making and consistent with the age of the piece. Fine glaze crazing consistent with age. The teapot is well potted and the transfers are richly detailed. This great little teapot is a joy to behold! Offered as is.
Nursery rhyme tea sets from this era are hard to find and quite desirable. The influence of the Aesthetic Movement is evident in the design. The piece will make a fabulous addition to your collection of children's dishes or Aesthetic transferware.
