Antique Papier Mache Lacquered Box
Gilt Silhouettes ~ Pan, Rabbits & Children
This fine antique covered lacquered papier maché box, Victorian, late 1880s, stands 2 1/4" tall and measures 2 3/4" across. It would have been made as a powder box or trinket box, English in origin. The rare gilded silhouette decoration on black background show children and cherubs playing with rabbits and animals. On the lid three children, one in a hammock, and the other feeding bunnies. On the base twelve children playing games of soldier chariot and wrestling.
The box is in very good overall condition. A small chip on the phlange inside the lid, and no other damage. Wear consistent with age.
A rare box with festive whimsy and charm. Small boxes like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their young imaginations through play. The winsome figural imagery is especially sought after, a throwback to a much simpler time. The box will make a great addition to your collection of children's and figural animal wares.
