ANTIQUE CHILDS TRANSFERWARE MUG
GOAT & DONKEY
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1840
This is whimsical little child's transferware mug, circa 1840. This small piece stands 2 1/2 " tall x 2 3/4 " wide with an applied loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in blue with multicolored underglaze painting in an array of delightful colors. The scene is of a young maiden and her goats at play on one side. The other side has another youth with a saddled small donkey. A lovely mug.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.
The condition of this exceptional mug is great. Clean and bright, and probably never used. Children's early mugs of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The images are delightful, a throwback to a much simpler time. The cup will make a great addition to your collection of children's dishes.
