Victorian Child's Brown Aesthetic Transferware Teapot LITTLE GIRL WITH BIG DOG Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890
This is child's or doll's transferware teapot dates to circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service or dollhouse teaset. the little octagonal pot stands about 5 1/2" tall to the top of the finial with a square applied handle and finial on top.
The decoration is transfer printed in an earthy sepia or chocolate brown. The pitcher depicts a little girl, named Mae or May, standing with her arms around a huge dog, probably a Newfy or Lab. Little May is wearing a big hat and the dog appears to be smiling. This endearing scene, framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies, repeats on each side of the teapot. The lid has a steam hole and has decoration along the rim that matches the border trim on the spout an handle.
It is marked marked with pattern number 766 and registration number 69456, registered by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little Mae with Dog" or "Girl with Big Dog".
The piece is in great condition with a small chip on the inside of the lid (not visible when the lid is in place) and no other chips cracks or repairs. Typical manufacturing imperfections original to the making and commonly found in these early naive children's wares. Fine overall glaze crazing consistent with age. This primitive antique teapot, more than 120 years old, displays beautifully, a great example of naive and whimsical early wares!
