Antique ABC Pearlware Plate ~ November 1840
Early Pearlware Child's Plate
MONTHS OF THE YEAR
Swansea, England ~ c. 1840
This is a superb child's transferware plate was made around 1840. The plate measures 7-1/2 inches in diameter with press moulded rim. A continuous impressed string of pearls wrap the inner and outer rim with the full Alphabet including the rare to find backward letter Z. The purple transfer printing is embellished with four-color hand clobbering in blue, green, red, and yellow. The plate is finely potted and finished with wonderful thick pearlware glaze.
The central image features the month of November, depicted as a child with hunting bow and horn, surrounded by an abundance of blooming flowers, vines and his dog.
The plate made as part of a series featuring the 12 months and 4 seasons of the year. The plate resembles children's wares hailing from the Staffordshire region, but according to my research, it is likely that it was made in one of several Northern factories, particularly the Ynysmedwy Pottery near Swansea.
Plates with images like this were made in the early to mid-19th century to be given as gifts for a special occasion or rewards of merit and were also used to aid in the education of young children.
The plate is in great condition, with no wear, chips or repairs. The transfers are clear and crisp with intricate detail and whimsical styling. This fantastic transferware plate will make a gorgeous addition to any serious collection of early children's wares and would be a fabulous gift for someone with a child born in the month of November.
