Early Pearlware Child's Plate

Swansea, Wales ~ c. 1840

This is a superb child's transferware plate was made around 1840. The plate measures 6-1/8 inches in diameter with press moulded 12 paneled rim. The dark brown transfer printing is embellished with four-color hand clobbering in blue, green, red, and yellow. The plate is finely potted and finished with wonderful thick pearlware glaze.

The plate's outer edge has a blue band and the central image features the month of March, depicted as a child sowing springtime seeds surrounded by an abundance of blooming flowers.

The plate made as part of a series featuring the 12 months and 4 seasons of the year. The central image, with a slightly different border, is shown in the book Gifts for Good Children written by Noel Riley and published by Richard Dennis. The plate resembles children's wares hailing from the Staffordshire region of England, but according to the author, it is likely that it was made in one of several Northern factories, particularly the Ynysmedwy Pottery near Swansea Wales.

Plates with images like this were made in the early to mid-19th century to be given as gifts for a special occasion or rewards of merit and were also used to aid in the education of young children.

The plate is in great condition, with no wear, chips, cracks or repairs. The transfers are clear and crisp with intricate detail and whimsical styling. The plate was made with great attention to detail. Minor ink slipping original to the making.

This fantastic transferware plate will make a gorgeous addition to any serious collection of early children's wares and would be a fabulous gift for someone with a child born in the month of March.
