Rare Child's ABC Feeding Dish
Adderley & Co. Staffordshire England c. 1940
This is a wonderful child's ABC or alphabet feeding dish. Originally part of a complete child's nursery breakfast set, the creamy earthenware bowl measures 7 1/4" tall and stands 1 5/8" tall. The decoration is applied in brown and colored with wisps of yellow, blue and green detailing, and green trim on the rim. The nursery bowl features an amusing and imaginative presentation of three letters of the alphabet:
A is for ANTELOPE
B is for BEAR
C is for CAT fast asleep in the Chair.
The bowl was made in Longton in the Staffordshire district of England by Adderleys Ltd. as part of its Nurseryware Zoo Alphabet series. (The complete set included a feeding dish, porridge bowl, plate, juice beaker, and mug.) The series was introduced in 1939 and was made until 1947. The mug is marked with the maker's mark on the underside. The series is discussed and shown in the book Gifts for Good Children, 1880-1980 by Maureen Batkin.
The bowl is in great condition, with a stable, faint Y shaped hairline on the inside of the rim at 9 o'clock, as shown in the detail photo. No other chips, cracks, repairs. It is well potted and spotless clean, and the images are richly detailed. This great little feeding dish is a joy to behold! Offered as is.
Adderleys Nurseryware Zoo Alphabet piece are incredibly hard to find and quite desirable. This delicious little piece will make a fabulous complement to any collection of ABC wares.
