Children's Brown Transferware Miniature Cup and Saucer ROYAL STAR Samuel Alcock ~ Staffordshire England c. 1835
This miniature cup and saucer is a stunning and rare transferware toy, circa 1835, originally part of a complete miniature children's tea service. The little round cup stands 1 3/4" tall on a raised pedestal base with a delicate applied loop handle. The saucer measures 4 3/8" in diameter. The set is transfer printed in a gorgeous chocolate brown, finished with pearlware glaze.
It is decorated in scarce pattern of a decorative star surrounded by stylized wavy zig zag and pinetree whimsy around the rim. The saucer is marked with the pattern name "ROYAL STAR" and "FLORENTINE CHINA", inside a beehive cartouche. The pattern is documented in Petra Williams' books, and is discussed in detail by Richard Henrywood in a recent article he wrote for the Transferware Collectors Club. He writes about the 'Florentine China Series: "Various romantic-style patterns dating from the 1830s and 1840s are found with a printed mark in the form of a beehive with a pattern title above and the trade name 'FLORENTINE CHINA' on a ribbon beneath. These wares have often been attributed to Samuel Alcock & Co. and eight pattern titles were listed in The Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery (Volume 2, 1989). It turns out that there is documentary evidence to support the Alcock attribution and one recent find adds further proof with an example of the mark on a plate which also bears another printed mark for Alcock."
The pattern is rare. We have been unable to find an illustrated example of this pattern in books by Doris Lechler, Lorraine Punchard and other standard reference books.
The set is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Stilt marks, transfer smudges, glaze imperfections, original to the making and typical of the period. Light wear to the rim. Offered as is, a fine example of a rare children's pattern. Children's transferware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. Early children's collectors and Americana collectors will be happy to add this plate to their collection! We have a few other pieces in this same pattern, which we will be pleased to make available for sale on request.
