Child's Transferware ABC Alphabet Plate
MONTHS of the YEAR ~~ JANUARY
Staffordshire, England ~ c.1850
This fabulous early ABC plate, 6 7/8 " in diameter with a crisp image transfer printed in a rich brown with hand clobbering in blue, red, and green. The central image features the month of January, depicted as a young boy seated upon a pedestal in a garden setting. The plate made as part of a series featuring the 12 months and 4 seasons of the year. The plate is shown in the book Gifts for Good Children written by Noel Riley and published by Richard Dennis.
Plates with images like this were made in the early to mid-19th century to aid in the education of young children.
The plate is in EXCELLENT condition with a touch of light discoloration to the well of the plate. No wear/utensil damage, no chips, cracks or repairs. The plate displays beautifully and is a fine throwback to a much simpler time in the history of children's education. The imaginative and intricate detailing would captivate any modern day child, too!
