Early Child's Pearlware Name Plate
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1830
This exceptional octagonal Staffordshire child's name plate measures a diminutive 4 1/2" in diameter. It is transfer printed in black with a press moulded floral border that is hand painted in red and blue, finished with pearlware glaze.
The name "MARY" is printed in a cartouche surrounded by flowers winding round a vine.
The plate is in great condition, with no chips, no cracks, or repairs. A previous owner drilled a hole through it for hanging -- the hole is visible upon close inspection, obscured in the decorative border. Fine glaze crazing consistent with age and prior use. An outstanding example overall.
Children's early name plates and mugs were given as christening gifts and gifts for good children. They are quite scarce and a wonderful gift to a special child today. The plate will make a fine addition to any collection of quality children's dishes.
