Child's Pearware Christening Mug Name Cup
A PRESENT FOR MARY
Staffordshire England c. 1830
This is stunning child's christening cup or name mug in the shape of a miniature chamber pot or thunder mug, c. 1830. The stout little bulbous round pot stands 2 1/4" tall with an applied handle attached with leaf terminals and a turned foot rim. Transfer printed in a rich black against a creamy earthenware with a pearlware glaze.
The mug features a decorative cartouche which reads “A Present for Mary”. It was probably made to celebrate the birth or christening of a girl named Mary, or may have been given as a reward of merit and a gift for a special occasion. It was made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early 19th century.
The cup is in EXCELLENT condition. There is a small chip off the underside from a stilt mark. The design is simple and elegant. It will make a wonderful display and a welcome addition to any collection of children's early wares or collection of early name mugs or miniature chamber pots.
