VERY EARLY PEARLWARE PLATE

THE PRESENT

MY GRANDFATHER

Staffordshire England ~ c. 1830

This fabulous earthenware antique plate measures 5 1/4 " in diameter. The plate has a slightly wavy edge with a moulded border of continuous flower heads and foliage. A broad green stripe warps around the central image of an old man giving a present to a child on leading string held by a woman.

The Present. ~ Who when a Babe in leading strings, Would haste to me on pleasure's wings, And brought me pretty things. ~ My Grandfather

Clean shiny and bright. Light weight and beautifully potted. Two natural kiln kisses to the rim from the pottery and two utensil marks with associated glaze flaking. The image on this plate is featured in Noel Riley's book Gifts for Good Children published by Richard Dennis and the illustration is by William Upton.
