Lovely strand of faceted jet beads from the late Victorian (ca1880) era. This classic necklace is comprised of large, hand cut graduated jet beads with a screw together closure. The multi-faceted surface catches the light when worn and really has a rich sparkle. All of the beads are hand strung on heavy dark thread. A striking statement and a necklace that will go with so many outfits. The overall length of the necklace measures approximately 24” around. The largest bead, which is in the center of the strand, measures just shy of 1”. Wonderful condition, no apparent damage or chips to the jet beads and the stringing is in fine condition.
History:Jet is a black fossilized wood found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard Jet. It is believed that the soft Jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of Jet. As a result, the Jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.
