James W. Tufts' late 1800's Teaspoon/Dessert Spoon Rack, has its makers identification number, 2104 on the bottom. silverplate ribbons and scroll-work along with cameos of faces are in its ornate border. This antique server-piece is in very good to excellent condition. Image 5 is a photo of page 135 from the year 1897 "Catalogue Supplement 1897 Fine Plated Tableware. James W Tufts, Boston" depicting the 2104 silver plate spoon holder/rack by James W Tufts for sale in the center of the page.

This beautiful and functional service piece is 9 1/4 inches tall and is 3 3/4 inches across the lower portion of the spoon holder's hooks. The makers mark calls out his name by using it to outlining the outside half of his circular mark; while the wording, QUADRUPLE PLATE, forms the lower. A capital 'T' is inside a circle inside a four pointed star within the center of it all and has word BOSTON then WARRANTED below it all. There are 3 photos showing the rack holding spoons for you to see how it will look. The spoons used were from our personal collection and are not included in the sale - they are full size dessert / tea spoons in the Tufts Windsor Pattern) and appear here to allow you to have better gauge or visualize the size of this piece. This rack / holder will make a fabulous presentation for so many functions grand or modest. ( M7947 )

James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer and producer of this beautiful piece was a well known silversmith, who, if history bears truth opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., that eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a wealth business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money purchased 500 acres initially and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more then a silversmith, I'd say.
