James Tufts business card, large hors d'oeuvres pick holder featuring the Victorian fictitious child / character from the late Victorian era of the scantily draped "naked cherub", otherwise affectionately known as baby Hercules as he’s handling / pushing a 'heavy' woven gondola style basket. Photo 3 displays the basket holding my shop's business cards so you can see what a wonderful job he does displaying business cards. The piece measures 3 15 /16 inches long by 2 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches tall. It is signed, James W. Tufts with a capital T in a circle with the circle surrounded by a four pointed star, Boston Mass. and its catalogue number 2668 beneath it all. These are applied by being stamped into bottom of the base. It is in excellent condition having been recently professionally re-silvered. There is another number hand etched in the bottom whose purpose is unknown to us. A wonderful compliment to any executive desk with many other purposes and uses as well, though out the home or office alike!

James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer and producer of this beautiful piece was a well known silversmith, who, if history bears truth opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., that eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a wealth business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money purchased 500 acres initially and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more then a silversmith, I'd say. (L9947)
