J.W. Tufts' Victorian napkin ring, Triple Plate, catalogue or production no. 1544, 1870's to early 1880's featuring the scantily draped "naked cherubs", otherwise affectionately known as baby Hercules and his twin. They are demonstrating their weight lifting skills for us, by team lifting your antique napkin ring, while bending the platform on which they stand with their strength and 'combined weight'! The napkin ring measures 3 inches long, 1 3/4 inches wide, 2 3/4 inches tall and tips my postal scale at a substantial 6 3/4 ounces; it is in very good condition, has an unsigned cartouche (no monograms) it is in original condition. It has receive a light hand cleaning / polish, it does have original small scratches, light wear to high points and a small rub-like area on the top, any further maintenance / care will be left to the discretion of their next care keeper through time, might that person be you?
James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer and producer of this beautiful piece was a well known silversmith, who if history bears truth, opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., that eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a wealth business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money purchased 500 acres initially and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more then a silversmith, I'd say. (L9384)
