Victorian Reed Barton baby or toddler curved handle spoon with a cat's face handle decorated with bow and ribbons, NO monogram and with the patent date of Oct. 9, 1894 embossed inside the handle, as well as, with Reed Barton's eagle, R and lion marks and with the word STERLING. 1890's Reed Barton ads for the spoon read in part, "To the little tot learning to eat it is practically indispensable. Nothing has ever been found which the chubby fist can grasp so conveniently or which carries the food so safely." Later date production versions of this spoon used only the words, Reed and Barton and omit the patent information and Reed Barton's marks.
This spoon is in excellent condition, it has been HAND polished and there are no monograms. It measures 3 5/8 inches long. Weighs 23.0 grams or 0.81 ounce. It would be a fine gift or an excellent addition to any collection. The spoon pictures are of the item you will receive.
Every baby should be "born with a silver spoon in his or her mouth" so to speak. We in a day of anti-bacterial everything, forget that silver is the original germ fighter and why our flatware and surgical instruments were original made with it....do you remember? Of course it is beautiful, not the answer; silver is germicidal. It does not just resist the growth of bacteria, viruses etc., in fact it actually kills them, just by being what it is, silver! Our ancestors may not have understood the science or that bacteria, viruses etc., cannot exist on silver’s molecular structure, it actual destroys bacteria, viruses etc., but they knew it worked!
