Asparagus covered platter or booté of Art Nouveau Staffordshire gilded transferware in a very rare aqua-blue Corsica pattern by John Maddock & Sons of Staffordshire, England, 1880-1896; this beautiful aqua-blue color is often referred to in reference books as a variant of flow blue and this server is in excellent condition.

The platter has an asparagus stalk likeness for the handle atop its lid and the handle is laced with gold; the platter also has a tree and well embossing for draining the liquid away from the asparagus it holds in its base. The feet on the bottom of the platter tilt it aiding in the drainage of any residual cooking liquid. The platter holds a vegetable portion measuring 12 1/2 by 9 inches. The lid measures 10 inches by 7 inches and from table to top of the finale measures 3 1/4 inches, keeping its profile low to keep its delicate contents warm and the platter from becoming too full thus damaging its delicate contents. The maker's mark indicates production between 1880 and 1896. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines and the glaze is bright creamy white and very shiny; any discoloration in the photo is shadowing and effects from the lighting. There are era typical anomalies; stilt marks, glaze pits, dust 'bumps, glaze skips and small iron flecks. Some light age appropriate crazing is present and a remarkable 75-80% of the gilding remains. This beautiful piece would be a fabulous gift for the discerning collector or gourmet in your life; YOU perhaps! (L2595)
