James W Tufts rare multiple Kate Greenaway characters on a footed tray, this one has its makers identification number 3118 and has five (5) of the famous Greenaway characters. It displays minimal usage marks and also has sought after strawberries in its center making this tray an extra specially nice offering. (Holidays and other special days approach for get-to gathers and don't forget gifts for that special collector in your life. Remember lay away is available here too.
This rare tray is a wonder find with its many Victorian Greenaway characters; there are triplets performing the duties of the feet and handles for the tray, all are appropriately dressed in Victorian attire down to their shoes! In the center is a very ornate country scene depicting a Victorian boy presenting an oversized sunflower to a stunningly attired Victorian girl and a EMPTY cartouche is below our couple, ready for a presentation or to to be left 'untouched' as you may desire. Strawberries complete with leaves and vines ring the outside border for even more added elaborate decorations for this server! The "server's" 7 inches in diameter to its rim and each child adds 3/4 inch more in width with her bonnet / her shoes. The back of the tray is marked, J. W. TUFTS, with BOSTON under it and TRIPLE PLATE (again under scoring its early age) under Boston. Catalog number, 3118, under all of the previous is present to complete its mark. The dish has slightly sloping sides and is approximately 1/2 inch deep in its center; no noticeable plate lose, this piece presents itself as very glossy piece with a light hand polishing. The perfect size for YOUR executive's desk for business cards, exotic chocolates, those notes about 'have to get done projects' or your special morning fresh fruits, pastries etc. Small enough to fit most anywhere, large enough to hold a lot! Works at home or office performing many functions for dinner parties large and intimate too. A great conversation starter in countless places, as well! ( L0768 )
James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer of this beautiful piece was a well known silversmith, who if history bears truth, opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., that eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a wealth business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money initially purchased 500 acres and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more then a silversmith, I'd say.
