James W Tufts 4175 high relief silver plate Art Nouveau eye catching tray, for business cards, as a pen holder, or for whatever you may choose, it to used for or to display. Completely by itself it would certainly be noticed. It is as provocative as it is a beautiful work of art. This piece bears the artistic hallmarks as a rendition of similar popular pieces of Art Nouveau art work of the era. The nymph center-piece is depicted on a bed of a foaming sea with her long hair washing back over her body, the waves and foam also supporting and concealing the beautiful nymph's reclining partial nude body. The tray measures 7 inches long by 5 inches wide by 1/2 inch high. It is signed on the back; Plate Guaranteed with a capital T in a triangle, James T Tufts Boston under that, and finally the catalog number 4175; all in an applied metal circle. It is in excellent condition very shiny with a dark silver patina and lighter highlights.
James W Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer and producer of this beautiful piece was a well known silversmith, who, if history bears truth opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., that eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a wealth business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money purchased 500 acres initially and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more then a silversmith, I'd say. (L0564)
