James Tufts' eye catching Art Nouveau high relief accessory, business card, pen holder dish or whatever you choose for it to display; it by itself will be noticed. It is as provocative as it is a beautiful work of art. The nymph center piece is depicted in a bed of foaming seas with the waves and foam supporting the beautiful nymph's reclining partial nude body; this may have been a rendition of popular Art Nouveau art work of the era. The tray measures 7 inches long by 5 inches wide by 1/2 inch high. It is signed on the back; Plate Guaranteed with a capital T in a triangle, James T Tufts Boston under that, and finally the catalog number 4175; all in an applied metal circle. It is in excellent condition very shiny with a dark silver patina and lighter highlights.
James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer and producer of this beautiful piece was a well known silversmith, who, if history bears truth opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., that eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a wealth business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money purchased 500 acres initially and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more then a silversmith, I'd say. (L0564)
