A Victorian baby's spoon with the legendary nursery rhyme favorite, mother goose depicted is being offered for your consideration. The spoon is in excellent vintage condition.
Every baby should be "born with a silver spoon in his or her mouth" so to speak. We in a day of anti-bacterial everything, forget that silver is the original germ fighter and why our flatware and surgical instruments were original made with it....do you remember? Of course it is beautiful, not the answer; silver is germicidal. It does not just resist the growth of bacteria, viruses etc., in fact it actually kills them, just by being what it is, silver! Our ancestors may not have understood the science or that bacteria, viruses etc., cannot exist on silver’s molecular structure, it actual destroys bacteria, viruses etc., but they knew it worked!
The spoon has very detailed caricatures; looking closely at our mother goose she is even wearing spectacles; when viewing from different angles the curvature of the handle gives different perspectives of the same scene! The word, BABY, is present in raised fancy script as part of the design on the inside of the spoon but no monograms exist on the spoon, empty cartouches are available, both on the back and on the inside loop of the spoon, if you desire to personalize the spoon as a gift. This wonderful spoon weighs 16.92 grams, 0.6 oz. or 0.54 oz troy; it measures 3 1/4 inches long and 1 inch tall at the highest point. It is hallmarked, Sterling, and does bear a makers mark, unfortunately, the striking of the design has left it illegible. We can clearly read the last character, a diamond with, Co in it, before that a smeared space and another diamond with and an illegible something else in it. Our closest surmise would be Fessenden & Co. to meet those descriptions for a mark, but again we can't be positive and would feel much better if we had seen this piece before with their signature on it. No damage to report, just wonderful old soft silver patina, you can leave it as it is or polish to the shine you prefer. A fabulous baby's gift or fabulous addition to your Victorian collection! (Please note: this is not a coffee spoon that has been bent to sell as an antique baby spoon.)(K8637)
