James W. Tufts antique Victorian footed silver plate tray with fancy floral cherub design is in excellent condition without monograms. This tray is the perfect size for multiple purposes including the executive's desk but certainly not excluding numerous other functions and decorative purposes.
This footed tray has two angelic figures in its center; one of them is certainly cherub in its form, as we can see the figure has wings, the other one though appearing cherub, does not display wings, both figures are captivating in their expressions. The tray measures 8 3/4 inches by 7 inches and 1 1/2 inches tall, it is ample in size to perform many functions; please see photo 7 for just a few possibilities to add to yours; as we are sure you will have many more, perhaps they may include using it as a gift for someone you Treasure! It is slightly triangular in shape which allows it to fit into lots of places and is a very nice height at 1 1/2 inches tall; it also has an ample slightly recessed area to keep the item(s) you put on and in it where you want them, IN IT! It has its makers information printed in a circle configuration on the back; James W Tufts, Boston, Warranted, Quadruple Plated and his logo with a 'T' in the center of that circle with its style or catalogue number, 3145, out to the side of this information circle. In addition there is a hand itched number on the underside inside lip, that is difficult to discern,. We have occasionally seen this tray appear on the market over the years, but never in any finer condition than this one.
James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer and producer of this beautiful piece was a well known silversmith, who if history bears truth, opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., that eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a wealth business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money purchased 500 acres initially and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more then a silversmith, I'd say. (K7558)
