Reed Barton Victorian sterling silver cherub handled baby spoon using the older marks of an eagle, a capital R in a shield and a rampant lion, marked with patent date of Oct. 9, 1894 is in good to very good loved condition. NO MONO on this spoon. In the 1890's Reed and Barton ads for the spoon read in part, "To the little tot learning to eat it is practically indispensable. Nothing has ever been found which the chubby fist can grasp so conveniently or which carries the food so safely." The later production versions of this spoon used only the words, Reed and Barton and omit the patent information or the Reed Barton's marks.
The spoon is still free from monograms after all these years, but that does not mean it has been left untouched by its previous little ones, I think everyone of them has left a little piece of history with this spoon. Nothing bad; if you look closely you will see them though, and rightly so; over 100 years of happy moments, fussy ones and temper tantrums too, of course. Its been cleaned and lightly polished, care has been taken not to remove its previously mentioned history (very few dings and lots of small scratches), history removal will be your choice. The finely etched little girl in the bowl depicts Little Red Riding Hood ( remember no laser guided etching existed then, WOW ). There are a couple pictures included, taken in different lighting conditions etc., so you can see her. This same spoon with and without an etched bowl appears on page N118, as articles no 1260 and 1261 of the circa 1901, late Victorian, Daniel Low and Co. Gold and Silversmith's Essex and Washington Sts Salem Massachusetts Catalogue N, with different etchings available. Catalogue also states: "These spoons are designed to overcome the difficulties young children experience in handling spoons of the usual kind." The spoon measures 3 11/16 inches long and weighs 20 grams. Whether this spoon will be part of a collector's joy, used as a pendant on a chain ( one of the latest 'things' ) or by a beloved new wonder to the world; may it be enjoyed!
Every baby should be "born with a silver spoon in his or her mouth" so to speak. We in a day of anti-bacterial everything, forget that silver is the original germ fighter and why our flatware and surgical instruments were original made with it....do you remember? Of course it is beautiful, not the answer; silver is germicidal. It does not just resist the growth of bacteria, viruses etc., in fact it actually kills them, just by being what it is, silver! Our ancestors may not have understood the science or that bacteria, viruses etc., cannot exist on silver’s molecular structure, it actual destroys bacteria, viruses etc., but they knew it worked!
