Famous Gorham Sterling complete known set celebrating Columbus's 400th year anniversary of discovering the 'new world' in 1492 from the Chicago World's Fair of 1892-1893 ( THE WORLD'S COLOMBIAN EXPOSITION ) is being offered here for your appreciation and consideration; it consists of a ring, bracelet, spoon and a one of kind display case. The set is in excellent vintage condition.
These exotic pieces were created in recognition of the Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand of Aragon's and Isabel of Castile's financial help, without who's assistance Columbus' voyage to the Americas would never have been made. The crowns and Maltese cross, etc. are in recognition of their royalty, nothing mundane about Gorham's designers even over 100 years ago. All three pieces are featured on page 52 of Chris A. McGlothin's book, WORLD'S FAIR SPOONS VOL.1 THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION ( a copy of page 52 is included with the photos ).
These gorgeous pieces of collectible history are made even more lovely by their dramatic natural oxidation. The ring weighs 3.46 grams, 0.122 oz. or 0.111 troy oz., it is 7mm wide and for its size please see the photo of with ring 4 times and reference it on the sizing mandrel. The bracelet weighs 11.31 grams, .399 oz. or 0.364 troy oz., it is 3/8 inch wide at the widest point and 7mm at the narrowest. It measures 2 11/16 or 68mm by 2 5/16 or 59mm and appears to have been sized, this was probably done at the fair at the time of purchase, it is professionally stamped in the inside with a '7', nearest the area that appears to have had a section added. This could correlate to its wearable size in inches, if you run a tape around the inside of the bangle it measures 7 1/2 inches, of course, you would have to be able to get your hand through it and leave room for movement, so please do not use that as a size for fit. The bracelet looks as if it were sized and then seldom if ever worn. The ring and the bracelet both bear the same signature, Gorham Mfg. Co., Registered, Sterling, 1892, a lion, a anchor, and fancy letter G. The demitasse spoon measures 4 1/4 inches or 10.8 cm and weighs 11.85 grams, 0.42 oz. or 0.38 troy oz. and displays light short scratches. The spoon is hallmarked, Sterling with its signature, Gorham Mfg. Co. on the bottom back of the bowl. Each piece shows signs of light use or wear, possibly more related to handling and intermittent polishing over the last 122 years than from actually being worn or used.
The fabulous mahogany leather or leatherette Victorian case with its pink satin & burgundy velvet interior is 7 inches by 4 1/8 inches closed, not including hinges or its gilded etched flip friction latch is 8 3/8 inches by 7 inches open. We believe it was created out of a box made for another purpose; an etui perhaps, after the purchase and probably had a bit of ribbon that slipped through one of the guides on the bracelet side to hold it in place. It displays some tiny holes and small areas of fraying to the satin and tiny areas of thin nape to the velvet on the inside, most you have to look closely to see. On the outside there are corner rubs and various small nicks, scuffs and scratches; again most you have to look for...it has obviously been meticulously cared for and magnificently displays the set as the photos depict. A piece of history for which few equals if any exist! (K3385)
