Victorian plaited sentimental hair bracelet from the 1870's is being offered for your consideration. The beveled glass covered ornate gold front of the bracelet tests to be 9K; all though there are no hallmarks on the bracelet. It houses an exquisite palette worked hair plume! The plume is held in place with a golden wheat stalk & interspersed tendrils of golden threads symbolizing prosperity and abundance ( an age appropriate few have broken free and float in frame ). This bracelet would have been a gift of friendship, sentiment, love and / or remembrance perhaps between mother and daughter, sisters or childhood best friends at a parting or separation likely to have taken place at one of their marriages and / or moving far away from the other. From the looks of the bracelet it was seldom if ever worn but was kept as keepsake; there is little fraying or evidence of wear. The hair still has ' give ' or ' stretch ' as it would have been pulled on and off to have been worn; we only slightly tugged on it, and it responded much like elastic, returning to shape. Dare we say this would have been the Victorian version of a ' one size fits all ', Victorian ladies were for the most part quite petite, and I have a 7 1/4 inch wrist, so although I believe it would fit I do not wear it, after all it is a 130 plus years old( I strongly recommend the purchaser buy it for display not wear). The ornate scrolled front decoration measures 34mm tall by 28mm wide or 1 5/16 inches tall by slightly under 1 1/8 inches wide; the glass measures 17mm by 24mm long or just under an inch by just under 3/4 of an inch. A gorgeous treasure for your Victorian display. (K1948)
