James W. Tuft's Kate Greenway character hors d'oeuvres urn / pick holder has its makers identification number, 3404, and features very detail dressed Victorian Greenway character next to an urn on a pedestal and its in excellent condition. Only displaying very minor evidence it was ever used (a few tiny specks of tarnish in the bottom of the actual holder) is all that can be found. His amazing attention to detail and care for the authenticity to Ms. Greenway's characters surely must have played a role in his Greenaway series' popularity in the late 1800's when her books were also popular. (Were you aware her books are regaining in popularity even today and many of them are being reprinted with multinational cooperation.) This piece is marked on the bottom, James W. Tufts, Boston, Warranted, Quadruple Plated in a circle with a 4 pointed star, in the center of which is a 'T', Its model number or catalogue number is 3404 beneath the logo. The '0' here when looked at closely appears like a 'C', the 'C' is a partially struck zero and is what is seen on others of this model, as well as, other Tufts pieces from time to time. It is 5 inches at its tallest point and the base spread is 4 7/8 inches by 2 3/4 inches at the tips of the feet or the platform span is 3 inches by 2 inches; the diameter across the opening of the holder is 1 13/16 inches. This piece would be lovely on a canape tray holding picks; wooden or the fancy frilled ones for the hors d'oeuvres at a party or holiday buffet performing a similar function. We've also seen it being used to display jewelry such as stickpins or office desk necessities like paper clips etc. (K1473)

.....................

James Walker Tufts (1835 – 1902) the designer and producer of this beautiful piece was a well-known silversmith, who if history bears truth, opened his business in Boston in 1875. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co., which eventually merged with several other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co. He had apprenticed at age of 16 to a drug store and rose to become a very wealthy business man, eventually after all the a fore mentioned accomplishments, he had the vision to build a "health resort for people of modest means" and with his own money purchased 500 acres initially and later 5500 acres more to build Pinehurst, NC (you know this city, of the famous resort and golf courses) from the ground up! Much more than a silversmith, I'd say.
