A continental silver ( tested 800 - 900/1000 ) outstanding figural partridge in a pear tree brooch, possibly of German origin with marcasites and paste stones from the turn of last century is being offered for your consideration. This beautiful brooch is in excellent condition. You may already be aware that the beloved Christmas themed partridge in a pear tree has its origin in Victorian nursery rhythms? And as a another point of interest the encyclopaedia Britannica states: "Paste is a heavy, very transparent flint glass that simulates the fire and brilliance of gemstones because it has relatively high indices of refraction and strong dispersion (separation of white light into its component colours)." Due to this coupled with their scarcity, beauty and collectability, pastes have value all their own just as due genuine stones. The pastes in this piece were finely crafted and the fire in these pieces are beautiful, it is easy to see why pastes themselves hold a high value; pastes may be foiled or non-foiled, these are the non-foiled versions. The era appropriate velvet and satin lined European push button presentation box pictured IS INCLUDED with your purchase. The brooch measures 1 1/2 inches long and 3/4 inch wide and it weighs 4.9 grams. This beauty has the typical Victorian pinned pin and an opened 'C' hook clasp, both function properly, our beauty comes to us, most recently from England, where it spend enough of its life to acquire an age appropriate English safety chain / pin assembly, which can be removed, if you so desire, before shipping. There are no missing or damaged pastes or marcasites. A timeless addition to your accessories wardrobe which will add a striking stand-alone statement with lasting appeal and value for you and many future generations to come! This of course, would have been intended to be a multi-seasonal brooch, not just used at Christmas in its day, as it could and should be worn in any and all seasons today! ( J1985 )
