Vintage Miriam Haskell classic matched pair of oval dress clips, large facet black glass cabochons haloed with chunky English cut rhondel elements,. both beauties are in excellent vintage condition.
The black English cut rondels are hand wired typical Haskell style around the large faceted ovals, all components are glass and are attached to a pierced metal frames; each is then attached to the pre-World War II solid steel back. You can find a picture of these clip backs on page 75 of Cathy Gordon and Shiela Pamfiloff's book, Miriam Haskell Jewelry, with a note stating they were used during the 1930's.
Not intending to be confusing, 'English cut' is the term for the chunkier cut of glass elements used in the construction of clips, it does not designate their source; its only the term for the chunkier cut of crystals from which their designer, Frank Hess, chose to create these beauties.
Both the clip backs are strong, function properly and the dress clips each measure a large 1 7/8 inches by 1 1/2 inches and 1/2 inch proud! Light desirable age appropriate mellowing and light finish wear with the occasional tiny nick to the glass is all that is reportable with these magnificent finds* for your treasure chest, nothing in our opinion that detracts from their stunning appeal only that, that on very close inspection affirms their creator, age and authenticity; the perfect accessory for so many occasions, seasons, events and ensembles! *Dress clips / ‘fur clips’ or pin clips are very versatile; they can be worn on pockets, collars, the neckline of blouses, dresses (as they were during the 30's and 40's) and t-shirts, as well as, hang them over a velvet cord or a chain ( try a simple rhinestone chain, too ) to make a beautiful necklace. Use them to dress up a hand bag, belt or sash. Tip: When using a pin clip as a brooch use an inexpensive plastic pieced earring nut on one prong as a 'safety catch' or if you have one, a stick pin clutch. A fabulous piece of history and a gorgeous piece of jewelry to wear now and pass down to future generations!
Miriam Haskell Jewelry is beautiful, classic, stylish and distinctive; one of the most recognizable designer styles though out the decades since the 1920's. These are just a few of the reasons her jewelry has retained and continues to increase in value; as well as, remained so collectible. Great designers; Robert Clark, Peter Raines, Larry Vrba, Millie Petronzio and Robert Lee Morris though out those years have managed to carry on the classic style first developed by Frank Hess with Ms. Haskell, while adding their own subtle and not so subtle touches and flare. If it is not obvious, we are fans!
