This is a vintage French Santon made by the Artist J.P. Marinacci. It is a nice representation of a French Fisherman as he is holding a fish and a net is wrapped around his shoulder. He is made of clay and has cloth pants, shirt, vest and cap. He stands about 11" high, one of my tallest santons. He is barefoot is on a round clay stand. Great face and hands.
A santon, which means "little saint" is a handmade clay figure used in a Christmas creche, part of a French tradition. These little images represent various characters from village life mostly in the Provence region. Santons first appeared in the 1700's-1800's during the French Revolution when churches were closed.
See the other Santons in my shop. Ask questions if you have them.
