Ceramic Arts Studio, Madison Wisconsin ~ COMEDY and TRAGEDY figurines. Designed by Betty Harrington. These mysterious female figures are wearing hooded robes in a glazed forest green, each with a differently shaped hood. They hold either tragedy (crying) or comedy (laughing) masks. The masks are light chartreuse in color. Their faces are exquisitely painted.
Both are marked CERAMIC ARTS STUDIO MADISON WIS. (C) along with their names. They also have a glaze mark of the early, original Harrington directed pieces. Used for inventory purposes, but good indicators of authentic CAS pieces. Tragedy has an oval reddish mark inside while Comedy has a pinkish mark on the rim of the pouring hole. Both of these marks can be seen in the bottom photos.
Comedy measures 10 1/4" tall and Tragedy 10" tall. Both are in very good condition. Tragedy has a small spot in back of missed glaze or slight surface chip. Doesn't feel like a chip and looks larger in the photo then when viewing the piece. She also has a spot on the tip of her hood. Again missed glaze or slight surface glaze chip.
This pair makes a dramatic statement and would make a grand display to your decor.
