This antique scenic, green transferware plate was produced by Wedgwood between 1878 and 1891 and it features Ferrara, the d'Este family castle. The image in the center of the plate is based on a print titled "Old Ducal Palace at Ferrera". It has the castle in the background, and a river with several boats in the foreground. The outer rim of the plate is abundant in foliage and flowers, including wonderful bell shaped flowers. The very rim of the plate is accented with gold.
This plate is marked on the base with an impressed Wedgwood mark and a green printed mark. The mark appears to have been introduced around 1878, and the word England was added in 1891 but is not present on this piece so I believe it dates the plate to this time period.
The plate measures just shy of 8" in diameter, 7 15/16" to be precise. It is in excellent condition and has no chips, nicks or cracks at all.
