This fantastic French engraving comes from the actual 1861 publication of " The Vision of Hell " by Dante Alighieri. It was done by probably the most famous French romantic illustrator - Gustave Dore. It measures 14 1/2" - 11". Dated 1860 and signed in the lower left hand corner ". This is the cover page for the publication and is a portrait of Dante Alighieri. The detail is beyond fantastic, the wrinkles in his face and brow, veins in his temple. The eyes have a startling stare and the unmistakable nose and chin. The garland around his head is so realistic it jumps off of the engraving. You can see him thinking and of course with his mind I wonder what he is thinking about at that moment. A true piece of fine art.
A picture of the cover page for the book is included for information only. This cover page will not accompany the engraving.
