Ceres, the Greek Goddess of the Harvest is the centerpiece cameo in this pretty pearl necklace and she is carved of shell in good detail.
About the mid 20th century Birks, the pre-eminent Canadian jewelers for engagement rings & wedding jewelry carried a large selection of antique cameos for their brides to choose from - and then created pearl necklaces unique to her to wear on her special day. I'm sure this made a beautiful statement on her special day.
Towards the end of the 20th century, the piece found its' way to a dealer at the renowned Harbor Front Antique Center and my client purchased it to wear at her own daughter's wedding, so the piece has seen lovely wedding memories so far - a tradition we hope will continue.
The pearls are 4-4.5mm in size, slightly baroque and well matched. They have a white body color with pink overtones and a bright orient and luster.
The finished necklace measures 19.5 at the shortest strand. As we re-string all our pearls before they go to their new home, you are welcome to specify your choice of length if this doesn't suit you. The cameo itself measures 25mm x 33mm framed.
This piece was a pretty penny 'in the day' and the appraisal we received with it from the 90's is near $3000.
CONDITION: In very fine antique/vintage condition with no damage and only light historic wear to note. The cameo is pristine with no worn areas or growth lines. Clasp and mount are 14K. Markings: Birks and 14K on the back of the mount and also on the hidden tongue of the clasp. I note a tiny bend in the mount on the right side which I will have my jeweler tend to this week. The pearls date to about 1950. The cameo about 1860.
Our fine jewelry is always beautifully presented.
A beautiful piece of jewelry with a beautiful history. This timeless and elegant piece can be worn by anyone, anytime - but if you're considering it for your own wedding - perhaps this will serve as your "something old!"
