The fabulous OTIS Sterling Silver Draftsman's pencil trademarked Jany 19, 1897 and has been coveted from the beginning.
It is 5.25 inches long in the closed position and is hand engraved with the ruler markings. The first from 1" to 4.5". The second section pulls out to 8.75" and the third expands to the full 12" length. It takes readily available 2mm Drafting Lead.
I first came upon one about 5 years ago offered to me from a fellow dealer and collector of early pens and pencils. By the time he told me he wanted $500 for it I had already fallen in love with it. I bought it - and kept it for myself! I am certainly not an architect or even a drafts-person, but I do doodle on just about anything within arm's reach! I just loved the pencil. The look, the feel in my hand - I'm not really sure why, but I still love it today, so I was thrilled to find another to offer up for sale. There is an antique pencil shop in the UK who had 1 OTIS a while back and I've come across another couple which were reproduced in 1910 and 1920 by Edward Todd (the earlier one had the hand engraved numerals), but even those don't seem too plentiful.
CONDITION: In overall very good antique condition. There is a monogram (and I've never seen a single one without.) The initials on this are G B H. The Otis insignia on the end and their logo near the Trademark Registration. Weight by scale is: 31.9 grams (without lead.) Original pocket clip remains tight and functional, no cracks and everything works as it should. A find for any collector!
Our fine antique smalls are always cleaned (with non toxic & non residue cleansers) and beautifully presented. They are shipped at no charge to our clients.
