A very special little piece originally acquired from the Mexican Indians as a souvenir in the late 40s.
The weaving is finer than my pictures indicate. There are 6 finely wrapped coils to each inch.
The basket is attached at the rear and opens from the front only. It locks with a braided rope knot (which I think may be a later replacement). Original braided rope from the top of the lid is, I assume, to be used for hanging this piece.
Painted floral image on the lid has appropriate fading in keeping with age and the colors are brighter at the sides. No unraveling. Basket stands perfectly straight and lid fits well. Mexico.
