I have used small faceted rondelles of dark blue Lapis Lazuli, a shimmering white freshwater stick Pearl, and a round faceted red Coral bead to create this long asymmetrical pair of earrings to celebrate America! I love the combination of these beautiful beads, I hope you do too. The beads are highlighted with tiny faceted pyrite beads and all the silver components are silver filled. Silver filled products are comprised of 10% silver, the silver is mechanically bonded to a brass core for a sturdy structure, and is resistant to tarnishing.
Lapis lazuli gets its name from the Latin and Persian (Iranian) words for ‘blue stone’. The color of this gemstone ranges from light blue to deep royal blue. The darker the blue the more valuable the gemstone. It is characterized by glittering specks of golden pyrite and imitation Lapis lazuli lacks the pyrite specks. This stone was associated by ancient Egyptians with deity and royalty, and also motherhood. It is thought to bring peace and cure depression. The best quality Lapis lazuli comes from Afghanistan, where it has been mined for centuries. It is also found in Russia and Colorado, USA.
Pearls are thought to represent innocence and integrity. A favorite with brides. It is the birthstone for June. Cultured Pearls are formed in both marine and freshwater bivalve mollusks (oysters, mussels, etc.) when irritating ‘foreign’ substances become trapped within the folds of the bivalve’s mantle. Not all such ‘pearls’ can be used for jewelry. Natural pearls are formed without any human intervention and are quite rare and hence very valuable. Cultured pearls are mass-produced in a ‘pearl farm’ where humans introduce the irritating substance into the mollusks to create the pearl. Most freshwater pearls are cultured pearls formed within mussels.
Coral beads have played a significant part in jewelry throughout history. People of many cultures thought that red coral provided protection from fire and violence.
