This is a wonderful custom built Chippendale partner’s desk from the 1870’s. The details and workmanship are exceptional. During the 1870’s we were celebrating the 100th or centennial anniversary of the founding of our nation. As a society, we were looking back and glorifying earlier furniture styles and trends. As a result, along came the renewed interest resulting in centennial furniture highlighting Chippendale, Queen Anne and all Federal styles. The emphasis was quality and design. This desk is a classic example of 1870’s centennial furniture in the Chippendale style. The solid mahogany desk has a carved gadrooned or rope edge along the top. All the drawers are hand dovetailed with original solid cast brass hardware. The top end drawers have a carved swag of bellflowers on their fronts and working locks with key. Below, on one side are 3 drawers all having their locks. The other side has a door with a recessed, heavily and deeply carved panel and working lock with key. Noticed the delicately carved quarter columns on the corner of the desk and inside the chair opening. Below are additional gadrooned carvings with acanthus leaves. The desk rests on boldly carved ball and claw feet. Now comes a real treat; the sides of the desk and even the inside of the chair opening have recessed beautifully carved shell designs! They did not skimp on detail when designing this desk. The one side of the desk mirrors the other except the drawers are false, yet the cabinet door is real. The finish is original and in excellent condition having the richest color and patina. 30"h X 48"w X 31"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1870's.
